Johor Bahru is one of the cities in Malaysia which is just a 20-minute bus ride from Singapore.  It is a popular place for Singaporeans where they can buy cheap finds and eat sumptuous meals.  There are malls like City Square JB and Komtar JBCC which are just very near Johor Bahru Checkpoint.

Johor Bahru, or what they call JB, has also hidden gems which are worth trying.  We visited two of those hidden gems.

Hiap Joo is a famous bakery not only in Johor Bahru, but also in Singapore.  Every time we visit this bakery, there are a lot of people queuing up just to buy from here.  Hiap Joo offers a variety of breads and their specialty is the banana bread.  Their very own banana bread has a distinct taste in it because they bake it traditionally, meaning they use woods which give the bread a unique taste, also making the top of the bread golden brown.  To add to that, the texture of the bread is super moist and the sweetness is just right.

After buying a few packs for ourselves and for our family, we headed straight to the other hidden gem of JB, which is Kam Long Restaurant.

KAM LONG RESTAURANT

Kam Long Restaurant is famous for its Curry Fish Head and Tail.  So as food enthusiasts, we didn’t let the opportunity pass.  It was 12 noon and there was already a long queue outside the restaurant.

Curry Fish Head (Medium) – RM 33

They serve this very hot and the soup still boiling.  We were wow-ed by the smell and appearance of the Curry Fish Head so we immediately had a taste of it.

The soup is very fragrant and you can really taste the curry flavor in it.  Since most Singaporean curry are spicy, this one has just a little amount of spiciness.  There are also a huge amount of vegetables like eggplant, string beans, and okra.  It also has chunks of tofu.  The fish is fresh and cooked just right.

Overall, our JB experience was great and we recommend to you these two hidden gems.  These are definitely worth a try!
