A Trip in the Land of Smiles | Phuket, Thailand

Phuket is one of the go-to beaches and vacation spots in the Land of Smiles, Thailand.  There are a lot of tourist attractions that you can visit in Phuket.  The prices are affordable and it is easy to communicate with the locals since they can speak and understand English.  If you will be visiting quite far places, you can ride in their popular mode of transportation which is the Tuk tuk, which costs as cheap as THB 20 per person.

Here is my guide to where and what to visit and eat in Phuket.

WHERE TO GO &  WHAT TO DO

BANGLA ROAD

Located in Patong, Phuket lies Bangla road, one of the famous tourist spots in Phuket. Along Bangla road, you will see various attractions.  There are food shops, clothing stores, and of course – bars.  In every area you will pass by, there are bars.  There are ladies, and ladyboys, dancing and attracting people, especially foreigners to go inside the bars and have some food and drinks, while watching their dance performances.  This road becomes  alive and bright starting from 7PM ’til dawn time.  Nightlife at its best!

PATONG BEACH

At the end of Bangla road, you will reach Patong beach. Though it is not as nice as the other beaches in Phuket, you can still enjoy the sunset and various water activities.

ISLAND HOPPING

Of course, aside from the good food and nightlife, island hopping is also a part of the bucket list of our Phuket trip.  So, we availed of the package which consists of visiting three islands (Yao Yai, Phi Phi and Khai islands), passing by other small islands (Maya Bay, for example), snorkeling, buffet lunch, and the boat ride. This trip is almost one full day so if you are planning to get this package, it is better to allot one full day solely for this trip.

There are many tourist stalls around Patong which sell various tour packages for different islands in Phuket.

The original price for an adult is THB 2,000.  But, after haggling with the seller, we ended up at THB 1,600/person.  If you have the skills, you can really save up a lot!

THE BIG BUDDHA

Located on the peak of Nagakerd, Subdistrict Karon, is the 25.45 m x 45 m Big Buddha Statue.  You have to climb the steep staircase to reach and be up close with the huge Buddha statue. Upon entering Big Buddha temple, you can see locals, and even tourists, participating in a buddhist tradition wherein they sing and pray.

There is a dress code upon entering The Big Buddha temple. Shorts and mini skirts are not allowed inside.  But, they are now providing sarong which you can use so that you can still enter the temple.

THAI MASSAGE

After a long day’s trip, the best way to end the day is to have a traditional Thai massage.  Along the streets in Patong, you will see several massage parlors.  What we did was we visited a few and compared the prices until we ended up in the cheapest among the ones we visited.

Traditional Thai massage has more pressure compared to other massage types like Indonesian/Balinese.  Thai massage has yoga positions which really stretch your body and give you pain if you’re not used to it.
